Sigan adelante. No dejen de luchar.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has proven of late to be a spur to developing nanotechnology-based solutions to some of the world’s problems, like a system for sterilizing medical equipmenteven in places where there is no electricity.

The foundation's latest Grand Challenge Exploration grants are aimed at improving the humble condom. The Gates Foundation granted $100 000 to the University of Manchester to develop a condom in November of last year, reportedly using graphene, that would lead to thinner yet stronger condoms.

With the University of Manchester becoming a “hub” for graphene research, it makes sense that any efforts to use graphene for the improvement of condoms would take place there. But the Gates Foundation apparently didn’t want to limit the prospects of improving prophylactics to just graphene. Last week, it was announced that the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Boston Medical Center (BMC) have been awarded a $100 000 Grand Challenge grant to develop a better condom using nanotechnology.

"We are honored to be a recipient of a GCE grant project in order to examine this important public health issue," says Karen Buch MD, a third year radiology resident at BMC and Ducksoo Kim MD, professor of radiology at BUSM in a Boston Magazine article. "We look forward to using nanotechnology to create a condom that is both effective and does not diminish sensation, which could help convince more people to use condoms and potentially reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections."

The nanotechnology that the Boston doctors intend to use for their improved condoms will be superhydrophillic nanoparticles that coat the condom and trap water to make them more resilient and easier to use.

"We believe that by altering the mechanical forces experienced by the condom, we may ultimately be able to make a thinner condom which reduces friction, thereby reducing discomfort associated with friction increases pleasure, thereby increasing condom use and decreases rates of unwanted pregnancy and infection transmission," Kim says in a press release.

So it appears the race is now on. Will hydrophilic nanoparticles or graphene be the nanomaterial of the future for condoms? Maybe both.

Individual monolayers of metal dichalcogenides are atomically thin two-dimensional crystals with attractive physical properties different from those of their bulk counterparts. Here we describe the direct synthesis of WS2 monolayers with triangular morphologies and strong room-temperature photoluminescence (PL). The Raman response as well as the luminescence as a function of the number of S–W–S layers is also reported. The PL weakens with increasing number of layers due to a transition from direct band gap in a monolayer to indirect gap in multilayers. The edges of WS2 monolayers exhibit PL signals with extraordinary intensity, around 25 times stronger than that at the platelet’s center. The structure and chemical composition of the platelet edges appear to be critical for PL enhancement

Plasmon-based optical antennas featuring a nanometer-sized gap can enhance the photophysical properties of solid-state quantum emitters by several orders of magnitude at room temperature. However, controlling the position and orientation of an isolated emitter in a metallic resonator, at the nanometer scale, has only been achieved in scanning probe geometries. Using radially polarized cylindrical vector beams and DNA-assembled gold nanoparticle dimers, we demonstrate the reproducible interaction of single dye molecules with the bright longitudinal mode of a plasmonic cavity, achieving decay rate enhancements of 2 orders of magnitude. These results demonstrate that interfacing efficiently isolated quantum emitters and optical nanoantennas is possible on a large scale.

material which can be dynamically tuned by electrostatic doping. However, the
direct application of graphene sheets in optoelectronic devices is challenging
due to graphene’s small thickness and the resultant weak interaction with
light. By combining metal and graphene in a hybrid plasmonic structure, it is
possible to enhance graphene–light interaction and thus achieve in situ control
of the optical response. We show that the effective mode index of the bonding plasmonic
mode in metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguides is particularly sensitive to the
change in the optical conductivity of a graphene layer in the gap. By
incorporating such MIM structures in optic antenna designs, we demonstrate an
electrically tunable coupled antenna array on graphene with a large tuning
range (1100 nm, i.e., 250 cm<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-MX;">–1<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-MX;">, nearly 20% of the resonance frequency) of the
antenna resonance wavelength at the mid-infrared (MIR) region. Our device
exhibits a 3 dB cutoff frequency of 30 MHz, which can be further increased into

are promising elements for high-speed electrically controllable optical and
optoelectronic devices.
